An independent resource for UW students

Use a quarter-by-quarter plan for AI work at UW

An availability estimate made at the start of autumn may stop working after registration for winter. UW’s calendar separates autumn, winter and spring quarters, with instruction and final-exam periods listed for each. Build a work plan with a review point at the next quarter change. If you are exploring research as well, compare the learning and supervision you want from a faculty project with what an external AI role actually offers.

Plan around your academic calendar

The official calendar separates quarter instruction, final examinations and breaks. Summer also has full-term, A-term and B-term options. Read the relevant column before proposing dates, and check your course-level assessments rather than assuming every week of a quarter has the same workload.

  1. Set a quarter review date

Once you know next quarter’s classes, recalculate your available hours. Share a firm availability window only after accounting for sections, project work and existing commitments.

  2. Reserve the examination period

Treat finals as a separate week in your plan. Ask a prospective employer how deadlines work then, and avoid promising a reduced schedule that has not been agreed.

  3. Compare research with task work

UW’s Office of Undergraduate Research offers a starting point for research exploration. Use it if you want mentoring and a longer investigation; ask an external role what supervision and feedback it provides.

A planning example, not a promised work schedule

Hypothetical autumn-quarter search: spend 30 minutes on Tuesday narrowing a shortlist, then 45 minutes on Friday reading one role’s assessment instructions. Revisit that plan after choosing winter classes. These blocks are examples for organizing a search, not a statement about available paid hours or an employer’s willingness to adjust deadlines.

Connect your studies to the work

Turn a coding project into a clear example

Choose work matching tools you can use independently. Write down what your code does, one failure case and how you checked it before comparing coding listings.

Examine scientific explanations

Look for a match to your actual discipline and research methods. Confirm any completed-degree or specialist-experience condition before investing time in an application.

Compare different work areas

Read across categories if your experience crosses subjects. Compare the task, feedback process and time commitment rather than assuming every AI role involves coding.

These are ways to compare your skills with a role. A major or enrollment alone does not satisfy an employer’s degree or experience criteria.

Ask before you commit

  • What changes in my availability at the next quarter boundary?
  • Do I want mentored research, paid evaluation tasks or both, and can I explain the difference?

Check minimum hours, deadlines, meetings, location and equipment in the full listing. Remote work does not automatically mean flexible hours, guaranteed tasks or permission to work from any country.

UW student questions

Are these jobs offered or endorsed by UW?

No. SignalGigs is an independent resource and is not affiliated with University of Washington. These are third-party listings from the same wider job inventory shown to other schools, not campus jobs or university-endorsed opportunities.

Does studying a STEM subject mean I qualify?

A relevant major is a starting point for comparing the work. Each role sets its own requirements, which may include a completed degree, postgraduate study, research experience, particular software skills or years of professional work. Student status alone does not establish eligibility. Read the full requirements before applying.

Can international students on an F-1 visa do this work?

Check the specific role with the University of Washington international student office or your designated school official before starting work. Your status, authorization and the type of engagement matter. A remote label or a listing on this page does not establish work authorization. This page does not provide immigration advice.

How should I compare pay and availability?

Use the stated pay and its unit on each listing, then check the hours, contract terms and selection process. An advertised top rate is not a guaranteed starting rate or weekly income. Project availability and the amount of paid work can vary.

Will these roles fit around classes or let me work from anywhere?

Check each role. Locations, eligible countries, time zones, required hours and onsite commitments vary. A remote role may still restrict where you can work, and some roles require a full-time commitment.
