An independent resource for USC students

Use your USC game and engineering projects to choose AI work

A game project gives you concrete material for assessing a coding role: the bug you reproduced, the test you wrote, and the behavior you expected. USC's Computer Science Games program combines computing with game development and includes final game projects. Start with work you can explain independently. A course or campus name does not establish job eligibility; compare your actual experience with each employer's criteria.

Plan around your academic calendar

USC lists semester instruction, study days and examination periods separately. Put those dates beside your own project milestones before offering availability. A gap between lectures may already belong to a team build or a lab.

  1. Protect the next project delivery

Mark your next playable build, lab hand-in or group presentation. Reserve preparation time as well as the deadline. Set an application budget only after those blocks are visible.

  2. Prepare a small debugging example

Create an original, shareable example with an input, expected output and failure explanation. Keep teammates' code, private repositories and course materials out of application samples unless you have permission.

  3. Check the working arrangement

Before accepting, establish expected weekly hours, required meetings and turnaround times. A remote position may still conflict with a late project review or an unpredictable integration week.

A planning example, not a promised work schedule

Hypothetical planning example: spend Tuesday's 30-minute search block comparing two coding roles. Use a separate Saturday hour to document your own test case. Leave the evening before a team build clear. These are personal preparation blocks, not an employer schedule or a promise of flexible paid work.

Connect your studies to the work

Code review and test design

Browse coding roles if you can explain a failing test and its fix. Check the language and experience level first; game-engine familiarity alone may not match a general software evaluation task.

Mathematical and engineering reasoning

Use a mechanics calculation or a model you understand to assess your subject depth. Read the degree criteria before spending time on a specialist application.

Writing and response evaluation

If your strongest evidence is explaining design decisions, compare roles involving written judgments. Look for the actual review task and rubric rather than assuming every AI role involves coding.

These are ways to compare your skills with a role. A major or enrollment alone does not satisfy an employer’s degree or experience criteria.

Ask before you commit

  • Can I show a test I designed and explain why it catches a real error?
  • Would the stated turnaround time fit a week with a game build or engineering deadline?

Check minimum hours, deadlines, meetings, location and equipment in the full listing. Remote work does not automatically mean flexible hours, guaranteed tasks or permission to work from any country.

USC student questions

Are these jobs offered or endorsed by USC?

No. SignalGigs is an independent resource and is not affiliated with University of Southern California. These are third-party listings from the same wider job inventory shown to other schools, not campus jobs or university-endorsed opportunities.

Does studying a STEM subject mean I qualify?

A relevant major is a starting point for comparing the work. Each role sets its own requirements, which may include a completed degree, postgraduate study, research experience, particular software skills or years of professional work. Student status alone does not establish eligibility. Read the full requirements before applying.

Can international students on an F-1 visa do this work?

Check the specific role with the University of Southern California international student office or your designated school official before starting work. Your status, authorization and the type of engagement matter. A remote label or a listing on this page does not establish work authorization. This page does not provide immigration advice.

How should I compare pay and availability?

Use the stated pay and its unit on each listing, then check the hours, contract terms and selection process. An advertised top rate is not a guaranteed starting rate or weekly income. Project availability and the amount of paid work can vary.

Will these roles fit around classes or let me work from anywhere?

Check each role. Locations, eligible countries, time zones, required hours and onsite commitments vary. A remote role may still restrict where you can work, and some roles require a full-time commitment.
