Use your Berkeley domain emphasis to narrow the AI work you assess
Data skills become more useful when you can explain the subject behind the dataset. Berkeley's Data Science major uses domain emphases to connect data work with areas such as ecology, economics and linguistics. Use the domain you actually know to narrow your search. A model's calculation might be correct while its interpretation is wrong; that is a concrete distinction to practice before applying for specialist review work.

Plan around your academic calendar
Berkeley's 2026–27 calendar identifies Reading/Review/Recitation week separately from final examinations. Reserve that period for your actual academic obligations before estimating outside availability. Use the current calendar alongside course-specific deadlines.
Write down one question from your coursework that needs subject knowledge to answer. Use it as a filter for listings. Avoid treating a broad data-science label as proof of expertise in every field.
Keep a claims-and-evidence sample
Create an original example with a small public dataset or a cited public source. Record what you can infer and what remains uncertain. Keep unpublished research and private class data out of the sample.
Plan around RRR and finals
Mark review obligations, final projects and examinations before accepting a start date. Ask the employer about fixed meetings and expected response times, especially if work would begin near the end of term.
A planning example, not a promised work schedule
Hypothetical example: a student with an ecology domain emphasis spends Monday reviewing one specialist listing and Saturday documenting a public-data example. A separate calendar block remains reserved for a course project. They make a new availability plan before RRR week. The employer must independently confirm any work schedule.
Connect your studies to the work
Domain-specific STEM reasoning
Start with a subject you can explain in context. For an ecology example, ask whether a conclusion follows from the measurements and study conditions. Check advanced-degree criteria before beginning an application.
If your strongest work is computational, compare coding roles against a reproducible project. Explain both what the program does and which assumptions limit the result.
Students whose domain work centers on text can compare writing or response-evaluation listings. Identify the subject knowledge, language fluency and review criteria each employer actually asks for.
These are ways to compare your skills with a role. A major or enrollment alone does not satisfy an employer’s degree or experience criteria.
Ask before you commit
Which part of my chosen domain lets me catch an error that code alone would miss?
Can I share my example publicly, and have I separated it from unpublished research?
Check minimum hours, deadlines, meetings, location and equipment in the full listing. Remote work does not automatically mean flexible hours, guaranteed tasks or permission to work from any country.

Are these jobs offered or endorsed by UC Berkeley?
No. SignalGigs is an independent resource and is not affiliated with University of California, Berkeley. These are third-party listings from the same wider job inventory shown to other schools, not campus jobs or university-endorsed opportunities.
Does studying a STEM subject mean I qualify?
A relevant major is a starting point for comparing the work. Each role sets its own requirements, which may include a completed degree, postgraduate study, research experience, particular software skills or years of professional work. Student status alone does not establish eligibility. Read the full requirements before applying.
Can international students on an F-1 visa do this work?
Check the specific role with the University of California, Berkeley international student office or your designated school official before starting work. Your status, authorization and the type of engagement matter. A remote label or a listing on this page does not establish work authorization. This page does not provide immigration advice.
How should I compare pay and availability?
Use the stated pay and its unit on each listing, then check the hours, contract terms and selection process. An advertised top rate is not a guaranteed starting rate or weekly income. Project availability and the amount of paid work can vary.
Will these roles fit around classes or let me work from anywhere?
Check each role. Locations, eligible countries, time zones, required hours and onsite commitments vary. A remote role may still restrict where you can work, and some roles require a full-time commitment.
