Plan an AI work search one UC San Diego quarter at a time
UC San Diego’s advising guide describes ten-week quarters. A search plan that looks comfortable at the start can become crowded once your own assessments and lab commitments are visible. Our editorial advice is to review the next two weeks before each application. Use the REAL Portal as a separate campus research and experiential-learning reference when deciding what kind of experience you want; external AI work and a supervised research project can involve different tasks and support.

Plan around your academic calendar
The calendar distinguishes the start of a quarter from the start of instruction and lists final examinations separately. Build your plan from instruction, course assessments and lab dates, rather than assuming the entire quarter has an even workload.
Editorial planning advice: place the next assessments, lab sessions and preparation blocks in one view. Refresh it weekly so a change in coursework affects your application plan promptly.
Separate the options
Make a comparison with columns for task, supervision and schedule. UC San Diego’s REAL Portal describes research and other applied-learning opportunities; read each opportunity’s details independently of external listings.
Choose a self-contained example
Practice with an original problem or public dataset whose use is permitted. Keep lab data and other people’s work out of an external sample unless you have permission to share them.
A planning example, not a promised work schedule
Hypothetical planning example: after checking a coming lab report and exam, a student keeps the week for coursework. The following week they spend 30 minutes comparing opportunities and an hour on an original data-checking exercise. This illustrates adjusting a search plan, not guaranteed flexibility in paid work.
Connect your studies to the work
Scientific explanations and evidence
Use the methods you know to assess a subject task. For example, identify what an experiment measures and whether the conclusion goes beyond that measurement. Check the listing’s requested depth of experience.
Compare a coding task with your own analysis workflow. Distinguish writing a short script from maintaining software or reviewing unfamiliar code; each needs different preparation and evidence.
Read for what you would actually deliver and who reviews it. A role title containing research does not tell you the supervision, methods or time commitment. Compare these details with your learning goals.
These are ways to compare your skills with a role. A major or enrollment alone does not satisfy an employer’s degree or experience criteria.
Ask before you commit
What changes in my next two weeks would make this commitment unrealistic?
Am I seeking supervised research experience, a particular technical task or both?
Check minimum hours, deadlines, meetings, location and equipment in the full listing. Remote work does not automatically mean flexible hours, guaranteed tasks or permission to work from any country.

Does studying a STEM subject mean I qualify?
A relevant major is a starting point for comparing the work. Each role sets its own requirements, which may include a completed degree, postgraduate study, research experience, particular software skills or years of professional work. Student status alone does not establish eligibility. Read the full requirements before applying.
Can international students on an F-1 visa do this work?
Check the specific role with the University of California, San Diego international student office or your designated school official before starting work. Your status, authorization and the type of engagement matter. A remote label or a listing on this page does not establish work authorization. This page does not provide immigration advice.
How should I compare pay and availability?
Use the stated pay and its unit on each listing, then check the hours, contract terms and selection process. An advertised top rate is not a guaranteed starting rate or weekly income. Project availability and the amount of paid work can vary.
Will these roles fit around classes or let me work from anywhere?
Check each role. Locations, eligible countries, time zones, required hours and onsite commitments vary. A remote role may still restrict where you can work, and some roles require a full-time commitment.
