An independent resource for Northeastern students

Separate your Northeastern co-op plan from an AI gig search

A role found online does not automatically fit a Northeastern co-op plan. The university’s co-op guidance distinguishes academic study from periods of full-time work, with planning through an advisor or coordinator. First decide whether you are seeking an approved co-op experience or considering separate work during a class term. Those searches need different questions about supervision, dates and the commitment you can make.

Plan around your academic calendar

The registrar’s calendar lets you select the relevant calendar and links its 2026–2027 reference. Use the one for your program. Co-op start and end dates should be checked separately with your coordinator and prospective employer; do not infer them from a generic job description.

  1. Name the purpose of the search

Put “co-op” or “separate work” at the top of your shortlist. If it is for co-op, take the actual role description to your coordinator before relying on it for your academic plan.

  2. Check the entire commitment

Compare the proposed start, end and weekly schedule with your next academic term. Include commuting or required meetings even when some tasks can be done remotely.

  3. Resolve overlap early

If you already have a co-op or another job, ask the relevant advisor and employer about additional work. Keep outside assessments and project data separate from your existing responsibilities.

A planning example, not a promised work schedule

Hypothetical class-term search: reserve Tuesday lunch to compare two listings and Friday afternoon to prepare questions for your co-op advisor. Wait for those answers before offering a start date. This example describes a search process; it does not establish that a gig is approved for co-op or can fit around another job.

Connect your studies to the work

Compare coding responsibilities

Read whether the work involves debugging, reviewing model output or maintaining software. Ask about review meetings and delivery expectations, not just the programming language.

Assess scientific work

Match the role’s subject expertise to your completed study and practical experience. Check whether postgraduate qualifications are stated before treating a science listing as a student option.

Clarify the work model

Use the coding guide to distinguish evaluation assignments from development work. Then confirm the contract, supervision and continuity with the organization offering the role.

These are ways to compare your skills with a role. A major or enrollment alone does not satisfy an employer’s degree or experience criteria.

Ask before you commit

  • Am I expecting this role to count as co-op, and who must confirm that?
  • Do its dates, supervision and hours match the plan for my specific program?

Check minimum hours, deadlines, meetings, location and equipment in the full listing. Remote work does not automatically mean flexible hours, guaranteed tasks or permission to work from any country.

Northeastern student questions

Are these jobs offered or endorsed by Northeastern?

No. SignalGigs is an independent resource and is not affiliated with Northeastern University. These are third-party listings from the same wider job inventory shown to other schools, not campus jobs or university-endorsed opportunities.

Does studying a STEM subject mean I qualify?

A relevant major is a starting point for comparing the work. Each role sets its own requirements, which may include a completed degree, postgraduate study, research experience, particular software skills or years of professional work. Student status alone does not establish eligibility. Read the full requirements before applying.

Can international students on an F-1 visa do this work?

Check the specific role with the Northeastern University international student office or your designated school official before starting work. Your status, authorization and the type of engagement matter. A remote label or a listing on this page does not establish work authorization. This page does not provide immigration advice.

How should I compare pay and availability?

Use the stated pay and its unit on each listing, then check the hours, contract terms and selection process. An advertised top rate is not a guaranteed starting rate or weekly income. Project availability and the amount of paid work can vary.

Will these roles fit around classes or let me work from anywhere?

Check each role. Locations, eligible countries, time zones, required hours and onsite commitments vary. A remote role may still restrict where you can work, and some roles require a full-time commitment.
