Professional civil engineering and surveying evaluation tasks

Create assignments from real drawings, documents, site imagery and related project evidence. Write both the task and the correct structured deliverable, which another specialist in your discipline checks before release.

Task scope

• Create plan comments, survey exception schedules and measured interpretations from drawings, maps, aerial images and site records.
• Review grading, erosion and sediment control, stormwater, roadways, traffic and work zone controls, utility services and floodplain permits.
• Cover civil RFIs, landscaping rules, protected trees, earthwork quantities and stockpile volume certification.
• Address ALTA Table A items, title exceptions, closing survey setbacks and elevation certificate photo checks.
• Interpret topographic and layered maps, date historic aerials and Sanborn maps, and verify assessor sketches.

Required professional practice

Suitable practitioners currently hold, or recently held, roles such as civil or land development engineer, land surveyor, or geospatial or Phase I environmental analyst. A civil engineering PE is required, or a PLS for survey and mapping assignments.

You need at least 3 years in the relevant role, with 8 or more preferred, and must be based in the United States. Work should follow US standards and state transportation or local land development practices. You need to move confidently among drawing sets, aerials, topography and parcel records.

Stronger fit

Experience reviewing agency or transportation department submissions, mentoring engineers in training or survey crews, and navigating repeated agency submissions is useful. Knowledge of different jurisdictions helps identify quantities, contours or exceptions accepted without sufficient checking.

GIS without engineered drawing review, drone operations without surveying credentials, environmental sampling without site plan review, and CAD work without design or review ownership are insufficient.

Compensation

The hourly rate is $45 to $60, based on experience. There is potential to increase the rate as the project grows.
