Description

Civil and structural engineering research

Help AI researchers understand the reasoning used in practical civil and structural engineering. This part time hourly contract draws on direct industry experience to assess generated content and provide feedback on whether it reflects how engineers work. The opportunity is listed for Canada and can be combined with an existing professional role.

Project responsibilities

  • Develop advanced problems based on actual design, modeling, estimating, construction, and project delivery workflows.
  • Review AI answers for technical correctness, practical feasibility, and consistency with engineering standards and professional practice.
  • Evaluate calculations, assumptions, models, quantities, estimates, and design recommendations for soundness and practical applicability.
  • Assess technical work involving structural design, code requirements, models suitable for fabrication, quantity takeoffs, estimating, and applied analysis.
  • Communicate findings through organized written feedback to help researchers improve model performance.

Core qualifications

The strongest candidates meet all four of the following criteria:

  • Current work in civil or structural engineering, or experience in the field within the last three years.
  • A BS, MS, or PhD in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Direct responsibility for creating models, calculations, quantities, estimates, or other technical outputs that people rely on to build, price, review, or approve work.
  • Demonstrated depth in one or more relevant technical areas described below.

Relevant specialties include structural analysis and design under applicable codes, fabrication level models and detailing, quantity measurement and estimating, applied simulation, construction documentation, and design of buildings, infrastructure, or structural projects.

Additional strengths

The following are helpful rather than mandatory:

  • PE licensure or EIT certification, and experience applying building codes, structural standards, and engineering specifications.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D, Tekla Structures, SAP2000, ETABS, STAAD.Pro, RAM Structural System, RISA, or comparable engineering tools.
  • Experience with steel, reinforced concrete, timber, masonry, foundations, or specialty structural systems.
  • Construction cost estimation, quantity surveying, cost modeling, or takeoff software.
  • BIM processes, construction documentation, detailed design, and coordination across disciplines.
  • Work in a consultancy, architecture and engineering practice, contractor, EPC firm, construction business, infrastructure organization, or another setting where engineers own technical deliverables.

All contributors need clear writing, close attention to detail, and the ability to explain complex civil and structural concepts. Independent work in a remote, asynchronous setting is required.

Hours, pay and project availability

Assignments are completed remotely at your own pace, without a fixed schedule or minimum time requirement. Hourly rates may reach $72, depending on the project.

Placement depends on available assignments. Additional projects may provide future opportunities if the current opening is full.
