Professional fire and life safety evaluation tasks

Task scope

• Produce egress analyses, correction lists and plan review decisions.
• Cover means of egress, life safety plans and fire access, plus alarm review from engineering and fire marshal perspectives.
• Address sprinkler reviews by engineers, fire marshals and property insurers, as well as hazardous material control areas.
• Include occupancy video inspections, verification of photographed firestop penetrations and review of fire system inspection, test and maintenance reports.

Required professional practice

Suitable practitioners currently hold, or recently held, roles such as fire marshal, fire prevention plan reviewer, fire protection engineer or sprinkler and alarm designer reviewer. A fire marshal appointment, NICET Level III or higher, or a professional engineering license in fire protection is required.

You need at least 3 years in the relevant role, with 8 or more preferred, and must be based in the United States. You should work with IBC, IFC and NFPA standards and be able to annotate plans, interpret hydraulic calculations and read device layouts.

Stronger fit

Training junior reviewers, writing standard correction language or procedures, performing acceptance tests as well as reviews, and applying different NFPA editions are valuable. You should spot missed occupant loads, travel distances and coverage gaps.

Fire service work without inspection or plan review, sprinkler installation without design responsibility, alarm servicing without design, and general occupational safety work do not meet this specialist scope.

Compensation

The hourly rate is $45 to $60, based on experience. There is potential to increase the rate as the project grows.
