Engineering Manager

Evaluate engineering work with a lead's judgment

Support AI research through remote, part time contract projects that draw on experience directing engineering teams and work lasting several weeks or months. Tasks focus on helping models reason about engineering projects as an experienced leader would.

The fellowship operates throughout the year, with opportunities opening periodically for different specialties. Assignments can be taken on alongside an existing role. Compensation depends on the project and may reach $200 per hour.

Project responsibilities

• Draft the briefs you would give an engineering team, setting out project scope, separate workstreams and the inputs needed for work spanning weeks or months.
• Develop evaluation rubrics that cover every deliverable in a project.
• Review extended, multi step AI work for technical correctness, completeness and consistency with actual engineering practice.
• Write organised feedback explaining how the generated work could improve.

Work is completed remotely and at your own pace. There is no prescribed schedule or minimum number of hours.

Required industry and leadership background

Applicants must be based in the United States and have at least 10 years of professional engineering experience in industry. That history must include at least five years performing engineering work such as design, analysis, testing, building or commissioning.

At least three years must involve leading work within your engineering discipline. Relevant leadership includes team, management, director, project or program responsibilities for efforts running over weeks or months.

Clear written communication, careful attention to detail and the ability to explain difficult engineering concepts are required. You must be comfortable working independently with remote colleagues on an asynchronous basis.

Applicable engineering disciplines

• Electrical, mechanical, civil and structural engineering.
• Industrial, manufacturing and physical engineering.
• Chemical or process engineering, plus controls and PLC systems.
• Aerospace engineering and biomedical devices.
• Piping, mechanical/electrical/plumbing work, or construction project management supported by technical engineering experience.

Experience that strengthens a submission

Helpful experience includes writing specifications, test plans, operating procedures, white papers, regulatory submissions or bills of materials. Verification and validation, commissioning, quality assurance, coordination with vendors or other functions, and leadership across several engineering disciplines are also valuable.

Work in regulated sectors such as medical devices, aerospace and defence, oil and gas or utilities adds relevance. Previous AI training or prompt writing is useful but optional.

Degree levels may include bachelor's, master's, doctoral and postdoctoral backgrounds. A doctorate is compatible with the work when the career experience is in industry; a primarily academic engineering background is less aligned with these assignments.
