Description

Test AI against power engineering practice

Build power engineering tasks from real design, analysis, testing, commissioning, operations and field work. Assess whether AI outputs are technically correct, safe and feasible under industry standards.

  • Create expert problems reflecting practical power systems workflows.
  • Review power-flow and short-circuit calculations, protection methods, stability analysis and equipment choices.
  • Check the assumptions, methodologies and recommendations behind AI responses, not just the final conclusions.
  • Provide organized written feedback explaining technical weaknesses and needed improvements.

Preferred experience

The ideal candidate combines two or more years of hands-on power systems engineering, an appropriate degree and substantial depth in at least one power specialty. The degree profile is an MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering or a closely related subject; a BS in Electrical Engineering also qualifies with strong industry experience.

Relevant specialties include transmission or distribution; microgrids and distributed energy resources; high-voltage equipment and substations; protection, control and relay coordination; power flow, short circuits, stability and contingencies; renewable generation and battery integration; power quality, grounding and arc-flash analysis; or utility operations, commissioning and field engineering.

Helpful qualifications

The following experience is valued but not required:

  • A PE license or comparable professional certification, plus experience applying IEEE, IEC, NERC, NFPA or utility standards.
  • Analysis or simulation with ETAP, PSS®E, PSCAD, PowerWorld, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, SKM PowerTools, CYME, MATLAB/Simulink, Python or comparable tools.
  • Protective-relay software and systems from SEL, GE Vernova, Siemens, ABB or similar suppliers.
  • Work at a utility, grid operator, engineering consultancy, EPC firm, equipment manufacturer or renewable developer. Examples include GE Vernova, Siemens Energy, Hitachi Energy, Schneider Electric, Eaton and Burns & McDonnell.

Applicants must be based in the United States. Clear writing, careful attention to detail and independent remote work are required, including the ability to explain complex power engineering concepts in understandable terms.

Schedule and compensation

This is ongoing, part-time contract work supporting AI research, rather than a conventional engineering job. It can fit alongside your current role. Work remotely and asynchronously, choose your own pace and take on tasks without a fixed schedule or minimum hourly commitment.

Rates can reach $120 per hour, depending on the project. Assignment depends on project availability; other opportunities may open when the current project is full.
