Generalist roles led the board — open to applicants without a specific credential, screening on attention to detail and consistency. Coding was second, with a late-month wave for legacy and niche languages. Translation and annotation kept their usual steady cadence.

Pay distribution

The bimodal shape is the headline. Roughly two-thirds of May’s hourly listings sat at the extremes— either entry-tier ($25/hr or less) or specialist-tier ($80+/hr). The middle band ($25–79/hr) is smaller. The practical read: AI training pays well at depth (credential, niche language, domain) or pays starter rates at breadth (volume tasks). The middle is thin.

What the patterns suggest

Specialist-tier kept growing.225 listings at $80/hr or above is the largest specialist-tier month we’ve tracked. The end-of-month wave was the big driver — senior financial-services roles (underwriters, claims adjusters, portfolio managers, compliance officers) plus the rare legacy-language engineering tier (COBOL, ABAP, OCaml, SystemVerilog, CUDA) at $80–210/hr.

The entry tier stayed.103 listings under $25/hr — translation, voice, volume annotation — kept Door 2 open for applicants without a credential. The mistaken read on AI training is “you need a PhD.” A quarter of May’s board needed only fluency in a second language or a careful eye.

Voice expanded late-monthwith a coordinated 7-accent CX-voice-cloning batch (German, Northern UK, Peninsular Spanish, Mexican Spanish, LATAM Spanish, Canadian French, and more) at $50–150/hr. AI customer service is being trained on regionally distinct voices. Worth tracking into June.

Geographic concentration loosened. Country-specific roles appeared for the Philippines (household video capture), Korea (UI/marketing linguists in US time zones), the UK (Magic Circle lawyers, consulting experts), and Vietnam/Indonesia (translation validators). Remote-from-X specifications are becoming a real filter.
