Description

Own a six-site WordPress environment

Bring backend development and website maintenance in-house from an external agency. Work within WordPress Multisite while an internal front-end developer handles content management, page building and user experience.

The backend remit includes site health, custom functionality, deployments and retained technical knowledge. Coordinate requests with marketing, front-end and IT colleagues, explaining technical issues clearly.

Maintenance and development

  • Apply security patches, plugin updates and WordPress core updates during routine maintenance and emergencies.
  • Monitor availability, health and performance across all six sites.
  • Work with Pantheon on backups, restores and incident response.
  • Triage and prioritize internal WordPress requests.
  • Fix bugs, build small features and configure plugins.
  • Build and maintain custom Gutenberg blocks in PHP and JavaScript, including PHP theme changes.
  • Maintain the shared theme’s Webpack build process and SCSS structure.

Deployments, integrations and reliability

Own Git-based deployment across Pantheon development, test and live environments. Review front-end changes before production release and configure hosting environments, domain onboarding and SSL.

Maintain integrations for forms, Google Tag Manager, translation connectors and APIs. Respond to critical outages, data loss and security incidents affecting any site.

Conduct technical accessibility reviews using axe DevTools and screen reader testing, then implement approved fixes. Maintain internal technical documentation so knowledge remains available after the transition from agency delivery.

Required experience

At least three years of WordPress development is requested, ideally including Multisite environments. Strong PHP and hands-on Gutenberg development in PHP and JavaScript are required.

  • Be comfortable with SCSS or CSS, BEM conventions and a build tool such as Webpack.
  • Understand WordPress patching, security hardening and vulnerability response.
  • Have experience using Git with staging and production deployment workflows.
  • Communicate effectively across marketing, front-end development and IT.

Additional qualifications

Experience with Pantheon or comparable managed WordPress hosting is helpful. Other listed qualifications include multilingual WordPress configurations such as MultilingualPress or WPML, Composer dependency management, DNS and domain configuration, SSL basics and translation management integrations such as Phrase or Smartling.
