Monthly Report·By James Mac

August 2026 in AI training jobs: the numbers.

768 new AI training listings landed in August 2026 — and the shape of them told a story. The board finished the month at 4,743 active openings, the largest we’ve tracked. But the headline isn’t the volume — it’s the tilt toward the professional tiers. 244 of the month’s hourly roles paid $80/hr or more, a record, while the entry band under $50/hr thinned to about a hundred. The market is professionalizing. Here’s the full breakdown.

Generalist roles led again — open to applicants without a specific credential, screening on attention to detail and consistency. But the real movers below the top line were the domain categories: evaluation, STEM, coding, and finance together made up more than half the month, and each rewards expertise over volume.

Pay distribution

This is where August broke from the pattern. Earlier in the year the board was bimodal— heavy at the entry tier and the specialist tier, with a soft middle. August was top-heavy. The two professional bands ($50–129/hr) held 305 of the month’s hourly listings, while the entry band under $50/hr fell to about a hundred. The practical read: the fastest-growing work now rewards a domain, a credential, or professional experience — and the “anyone with a laptop” tier, while still open, is a shrinking share of what’s new.

What the patterns suggest

The specialist tier set a record.244 hourly listings at $80/hr or above is the most we’ve tracked in a month. The growth was broad, not one vertical — senior software and code-review roles, finance and quantitative analysts, legal and compliance reviewers, and STEM domain experts all posted in depth. When a market pays up like this, it’s buying scarcity: judgment a model can’t yet fake.

The entry tier didn’t vanish — it got out-grown.Roughly a hundred hourly roles paid under $50/hr: voice recording, annotation, generalist evaluation that screens on a careful eye rather than a credential. Door 2 is still open. But as a share of what’s new, the accessible tier is smaller than it was in the spring. The takeaway for newcomers isn’t “you need a PhD” — it’s “pick a domain and lean into it,” because that’s where the board is growing.

Language work went deep and specific.A large share of the month’s new roles were non-English linguist positions — translation, localization QA, and multilingual review across dozens of languages, from major markets to long-tail scripts. AI is being trained to sound native, not just fluent, and that requires people with a real second language rather than a tool.

Evaluation is now a pillar, not a niche. At 113 new roles, judging AI output for correctness and safety was the second-largest category all month. It sits in the accessible-to-mid band and screens on judgment, which makes it the single best on-ramp for someone with a professional background but no AI-specific credential.

Methodology

Counts cover listings first detected by the SignalGigs tracker between 2026-08-01 and 2026-08-31 (Pacific). A listing is “new” if it wasn’t there the prior scrape. Pay bands group by pay_max for hourly listings only; project-based and one-time fees are excluded from the pay chart but counted in the headline 768 figure. Category labels come from our 12-category taxonomy applied after content review. The active-board figure is a month-end snapshot.
