Direct natural conversational recordings

You'll lead live voice sessions for a project collecting both scripted and conversational audio. The recordings support synthesized voices for conversational AI products, with an emphasis on everyday speech rather than a polished recital of a script.

The work combines creative direction, performer coaching and technical listening. Your task is to help prepared dialogue feel spontaneous and believable while keeping the session moving at a natural pace.

During each session

• Coach contributors through scenarios so the delivery sounds conversational, not like word for word recitation.
• Quickly establish who is speaking, where the scene takes place and why the conversation is happening.
• Improvise around missing context or gaps in dialogue, adjusting phrasing to suit the required region and dialect.
• Listen for microphone technique, pacing, clarity and unwanted background sound, correcting technical issues as they occur.
• Balance recording targets with performance quality and keep orderly notes about changes and retakes.
• Make the session supportive and low pressure, including for contributors with little voice recording experience.

Required experience

You need native fluency in the assigned language and dialect, with an ear for colloquial phrasing. Experience directing, coaching or producing voice talent is required; relevant backgrounds include voice or casting direction, podcast or audio production, dubbing, ADR and theater direction.

You should be able to give specific, actionable performance feedback and build rapport quickly with people of different experience levels. Comfort with live improvisation and on the spot script changes is important.

A working understanding of recording fundamentals is also necessary, including microphone distance, plosives, room sound and recording levels. The creative and technical parts of the session are both part of the director's responsibility.

Helpful additional background

• Improvisation, theater direction or acting coaching.
• Experience directing first time or nonprofessional voice contributors.
• Familiarity with recording software such as Pro Tools, Adobe Audition or Reaper for checking audio quality.

These additional backgrounds are preferred, not required.

Commitment and project support

The work is remote and freelance. Plan for approximately eight hours of calibration, followed by supervision of two recording sessions lasting about four hours each per participant.

Project opportunities can fit your availability. Optional workshops cover AI and large language models without requiring coding, and contributors have access to guidance from a global support community.

The stated compensation is $55 per hour.
