Laboratory chemistry for AI research

Contribute practical chemistry judgment to the design and evaluation of scientific AI. Work with research and engineering teams on gaps in synthesis, reaction mechanisms, structure determination and reasoning about physical and chemical properties.

Expert responsibilities

• Create challenging problems that are not resolved through straightforward searching, with accurate and clearly structured solutions.
• Develop benchmarks and training material for multistep synthesis routes, reaction optimization and spectroscopic characterization.
• Review model outputs and reasoning for chemical logic, correct use of tools and factual reliability, explaining defects in writing.
• Establish specifications, grading criteria and verification methods for chemistry data created by external technical teams.
• Advise on experimental plans, common laboratory failures and chemical validity, including molecular representations such as SMILES.
• Work with other experts to keep data and assessments consistent.

Qualifications and practical methods

A PhD in synthetic, organic, medicinal, analytical, physical or related chemistry is expected; equivalent research experience is acceptable. At least 3 years of direct chemistry work is required in a recognized pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemicals or materials business, contract research organization or university laboratory.

You need practical experience designing and carrying out multistep small molecule syntheses and improving reaction conditions. Compound characterization experience should include techniques such as NMR, mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy and HPLC or LC MS, with the ability to interpret their results.

Comfort using cheminformatics and scientific AI applications is required, but coding is unnecessary. Knowledge of SMILES or SMARTS, benchmark creation, rubric writing or evaluation of scientific models or agents is useful.

Engagement and communication

This is a part time position through an employer of record partner or an appropriate international entity, with the opportunity to contribute within an AI laboratory’s extended workforce. The employment partner manages the employment relationship, payroll and benefits.

At least 20 hours of reliable weekday availability are required each week. Clear technical writing and constructive collaboration are essential, including the ability to explain complex scientific decisions in terms that other reviewers can follow.
