Military Operations & IHL Expert

The work

Help build AI evaluation frameworks for military operations and international humanitarian law. This remote contract draws on defense and conflict ethics expertise to assess military and humanitarian scenarios. Prior AI experience is not required.

• Organize military uses and defense activities into detailed taxonomies spanning different conflict settings.
• Develop triage frameworks to separate civilian and military uses of technologies or knowledge.
• Define IHL limits on assistance that must not be provided, translating those boundaries into structured training and evaluation material.
• Create scenario assessments and conflict risk rubrics covering operational consequences and ethical considerations.
• Review policy benchmarks so AI tests in defense and humanitarian settings are conducted responsibly.
• Explain warfighting, targeting and legal concepts in written and spoken analyses that interdisciplinary colleagues can understand.

Preferred experience and skills

• Preferred experience is at least five years in military work, defense analysis or IHL; senior contributors ideally have eight to twenty years.
• An MA, LLM, PhD or comparable operational experience in military science, security studies, international law or a related subject.
• A credible record in operational planning, warfighting, targeting law or practical humanitarian law.
• Ability to interpret conflict ethics and defense policy in realistic settings, with clear and concise communication.
• Research, advisory or policy experience in military, government, legal or think tank settings.
• Conflict analysis, war crimes investigation or weapons policy work is especially useful.

Working arrangements

The work is performed remotely as a contractor alongside other domain experts.
