Mathematician – Foundations & Formalization (AI Research Contract)

Formal mathematics for AI

Translate advanced mathematical reasoning into machine-checkable proofs for AI research. This fully remote hourly contract offers flexible, asynchronous work for 10 to 40 hours per week.

The focus combines pure mathematics, logic, and formal systems with the training of language models capable of mathematical reasoning. Contributions also support formal mathematical libraries used beyond individual tasks.

Responsibilities

• Formalize advanced mathematical arguments and theorems in Lean 4 across a range of mathematical disciplines.
• Help expand and improve formal mathematical libraries, including mathlib.
• Write clean, readable, well-structured formal proofs that faithfully translate informal reasoning into a form machines can verify.
• Audit existing proofs for correctness, completeness, and logical integrity.
• Contribute mathematical work used to train and improve AI language models.

Qualifications

• A master's degree or PhD in mathematics or a closely related field.
• A strong background in rigorous proof writing and logical reasoning.
• Practical experience with formal proof assistants; Lean 4 is strongly preferred.
• Ability to translate informal mathematical ideas into structured, machine-verifiable proofs.
• Comfort working independently and maintaining progress in a remote, asynchronous environment.

Helpful experience

Experience with proof verification, theorem proving, or mathematical formalization is useful. Familiarity with mathlib or other large formal libraries, data annotation, data quality evaluation, and AI training workflows is also valued.

Experience across topology, algebra, analysis, logic, and other mathematical domains is welcome. The contract provides independent technical work with AI research teams, and ongoing work or extensions may become available as new projects launch.
