Senior Protection Engineer (Medium Voltage / Utility Distribution)

Utility protection expertise for AI

Contribute practical engineering judgment to an AI training project in utility distribution. This remote contractor role focuses on medium voltage protection systems, and previous AI experience is not required.

Technical assessment work

• Validate reference cases containing relay settings, coordination curves and protection event logs for medium voltage distribution networks.
• Review protective relaying documents and device coordination methods, giving technical feedback on their quality.
• Analyze fault current studies and equipment protection assessments using established engineering methods.
• Evaluate the application of SEL, GE and comparable microprocessor relays in medium voltage systems.
• Write detailed, organized explanations of your analysis and recommendations.
• Communicate with project managers and technical leads and help develop varied, realistic training and validation scenarios reflecting US utility or industrial practice.

Preferred engineering background

At least eight years of practical protection engineering experience is preferred in US distribution utilities or industrial environments, covering medium voltage systems from 2.4 kV to 38 kV. A strong foundation in relaying, settings, power system analysis and device coordination is valuable.

Preferred tool experience includes SEL, GE or similar microprocessor relays and their software, together with advanced work in ETAP, ASPEN or CAPE. Experience creating or validating technical documents, protection settings or relay coordination studies is especially relevant.

Communication and analysis

The preferred working style combines detailed technical review with rigorous analysis of documentation and datasets. You should be able to synthesize complex engineering concepts and explain the reasoning clearly in both writing and conversation.
