Visual effects and preproduction evaluation

Help an AI laboratory assess generated footage against the standards of feature film visual effects. The scope includes fine image detail, believable physical simulation, integration across compositing layers, previsualization and concept work.

Expert contributions

• Develop quality criteria and a classification of visual artifacts, and identify weaknesses in current evaluation methods.
• Find and create reference examples covering excellent work and difficult cases in effects, simulation, previs and concept design.
• Compare early model outputs against those examples and inspect footage frame by frame.
• Write actionable notes about instability over time, visible compositing joins, color spill, physical behavior and small details.
• Help define reviewer selection and calibration, and check that captioning guidance expresses effects, physics and preproduction details correctly.
• Coordinate judgments with other specialists to keep reviews consistent.

Relevant experience

At least 7 years of professional work in feature visual effects, animation or virtual production is required, together with credits on 2 or more professional films.

Suitable backgrounds include VFX or compositing supervision, lead Nuke or Flame compositing, effects technical direction or CG supervision in fluids, fire, cloth or hair, and previs or postvis supervision. Senior concept artists, matte painters and visual development artists are also relevant.

You need a detailed eye for temporal artifacts, compositing boundaries, spill, physics and fine detail. Direct use of generative tools to create concept artwork, previs and test samples for comparison is required.

Access to a reliable 4K display is helpful for examining individual pixels and small image defects.

Employment and availability

This is a full time W2 role through an employer of record partner, with an opportunity to work within an AI laboratory’s extended workforce. Plan for approximately 40 hours each week during weekdays.

The employment partner administers payroll and benefits. Strong written communication is essential: you must translate visual observations into precise language for captions, review notes and evaluation templates.
