Performance & Directing Supervisor

The work

Help an AI lab evaluate whether generated video captures convincing acting and staging. Define quality standards, build performance benchmarks and provide precise notes on realism, emotional nuance, blocking and continuity.

• Establish criteria for believable acting, blocking, screen direction, eyelines and continuity, including the 180 degree rule.
• Critique existing evaluations and categorize the ways generated performances fail.
• Find, create and curate examples of strong or especially difficult dramatic performances and staging.
• Test early model capabilities against those benchmarks.
• Review generated scenes as in dailies and write actionable notes on performance, staging and continuity.
• Help define how human reviewers are selected and calibrated.
• Review captioning guidance so it captures subtle directing and performance details accurately.
• Coordinate with other specialists to keep evaluations consistent and dependable.

Experience and skills

• At least seven years of professional experience in film, television, theater or animation.
• Credits on at least two professional films.
• A background as a film or television director or first assistant director; animation director or character animation supervisor; script supervisor; or performance capture director, acting teacher or coach.
• A precise eye for microexpressions, emotional beats, eyelines, staging and continuity.
• Practical generative image and video tool use, such as Runway, Midjourney, Sora or Kling, including creating your own comparison and test samples.
• Reliable access to a 4K display for close visual review is helpful.
• Dependable availability for around 40 hours per week on weekdays.
• Strong writing that translates acting, blocking and directing observations into precise captions and evaluation criteria.

Working arrangements

This full time role is a W-2 employment engagement through an employer of record partner, with potential placement in an AI lab’s extended workforce. The partner handles employment, payroll and benefits while the work supports the client’s generative video research.
